packet sniffer, part of the SYGNAL broadcast toolkit, listens to a network port and lists every device it hears: what each box is, its addresses, how to reach it from this Mac, and what it is doing (Dante, OMNEO, PTP clocks, multicast streams).
This installs a small menu bar app that runs packet sniffer on this Mac, and a capture helper that lets you listen on a
network port without typing your password each time (it gives the access_bpf group, with you in it, use of the
capture devices; Wireshark's helper does the same).
packet sniffer doesn't start at login unless you turn on Start at login in SYGNAL toolbox. The menu bar app and toolbox both look after it.
Making a port silent, or giving this Mac an address to talk to a device, still asks for your password each time.
